UT Austin student jobs: Workday, pay and class time

Use the right job board, check the role’s conditions and compare the hours you can actually work with the bills you need to pay.

For UT Austin student jobs, start with the university’s Workday Student Jobs Site, linked by UT Human Resources. HR identifies it as the primary platform for undergraduate, graduate, academic, non-academic and on-campus work-study positions.

The broader 12twenty@Texas board serves internships, co-ops, part-time and full-time opportunities. Keep the employer and funding separate: One Stop currently limits off-campus Federal Work-Study to select elementary reading or math tutoring positions. Other off-campus jobs listed there are not eligible for FWS funding.

Method & limits

UT Human Resources and financial-aid resources checked October 26, 2026. Job openings, pay and individual eligibility depend on the current posting and hiring department. The income comparison is illustrative, not a wage or job offer.

Choose the board and the kind of work

Use Workday’s student site for university student employment, then check departments that match your interests. HR also points to department websites and resources for research and academic positions. A general staff vacancy is a different search from a role requiring student status.

Track the employer, position title, posting link, application deadline and materials requested. Read the actual duties before reusing an application. A front-desk role, a lab-support position and a tutoring job may ask for different evidence even when their weekly hours look similar.

Check the conditions attached to that job

For most student non-academic titles, HR describes a fall/spring minimum of six semester credit hours, with named exceptions and separate summer provisions. Academic roles, graduate appointments, work-study and work-authorization situations can have different requirements. The hiring department may set additional limits.

Before committing to a schedule, identify the job title and ask the department to confirm the conditions relevant to your enrollment. If your course load changes, recheck the assignment rather than assuming eligibility stays the same because the application was accepted earlier.

Compare feasible earnings, not just the hourly number

Use an explicitly hypothetical comparison: Job A pays $13 per hour for 12 hours each week; Job B pays $15 for 8 hours. Over four paid weeks, that is $624 gross versus $480 gross. The higher hourly rate produces less total income because the available hours differ.

Those figures are before taxes, deductions, unpaid time and travel costs. Ask what hours are expected, how shifts are assigned, when pay arrives and whether work continues over breaks. Do not build a year-round rent plan from a posting that only establishes work during a limited term.

Treat work-study as employment with an award limit

One Stop describes work-study as an opportunity to earn money through an eligible job. An award is not a completed hire or a lump-sum tuition payment. Its current guidance restricts off-campus FWS to select elementary reading or math tutoring, a narrower rule than HR’s general community-service description. Use One Stop’s program instructions to check an off-campus role.

When comparing a work-study role, keep the award period, remaining eligible amount, wage and expected hours together. Ask how the employer handles the point when award funding ends. Use the actual offer and aid record rather than copying another student’s arrangement into your budget.

Fit the shift around the actual class and housing schedule

Map the shift against classes, labs, study time and the trip from your residence. Two available hours between classes do not necessarily create a usable two-hour shift once the route and required arrival time are included. Test the job location with the campus-map guide.

For a West Campus lease, compare reliable expected take-home pay with the actual installment dates and summer commitment. Keep uncertain shifts and a hoped-for future offer out of the base case. The billing guide and complete-lease comparison keep the university and apartment obligations visible separately.
