Canfield Business Honors: choose your application route

Freshman and sophomore applicants face different requirements. Start with the right route, then build evidence for the application you actually submit.

The Canfield Business Honors Program at UT Austin is a Business Honors major within McCombs. Applying to McCombs and applying to Canfield are separate decisions. Your first task is to identify whether you are applying from high school or after your first college year; the program publishes different requirements for those routes. Official Canfield admissions

One consequential difference: the current freshman application page says there are no pre-admission phone interviews. The sophomore page still lists invitation-only alumni phone interviews in June. An interview checklist that omits the applicant route can therefore be wrong even when part of it comes from an official page.

Method & limits

Official pages checked October 26, 2026. The 32 admits from 188 applications describe 2026 sophomore admission only. Freshman instructions and 2027 university decision dates are separate sources. Recheck the live application for cycle-specific requirements and the reopened sophomore application for its deadline.

What you would study

Business Honors covers the business disciplines, and the program’s flexible-degree page says most students combine it with another major. A second business major can be added after freshman year; combinations outside McCombs require their own planning. The page also identifies integrated options such as Texas CSB and Texas ECB. Degree combinations and sample sequences

Before choosing a combination, lay its required courses beside your incoming credits and the courses you want to take. A sample four-year sequence is a planning example, not confirmation that every course will be offered in the term you need. Ask an advisor to resolve conflicts before treating a double major as a settled schedule.

Choose the correct application route

Use the route to select your checklist. A university admission offer, a McCombs offer and a Canfield offer should each have its own confirmation in your records. The McCombs acceptance-rate guide explains why the school’s BBA percentage is not an honors admission rate.

The freshman essay, résumé and recommendation

Canfield’s detailed application page directs freshman applicants to select Unspecified Business as their first-choice major on the Common App and complete the honors essay. It also requires an expanded résumé and an academic recommendation. Follow the submission options in the live checklist and verify completion in MyStatus. Official application process

The current honors prompt has a 300-word limit and asks you to use a résumé example to explain teamwork and community. A useful draft identifies the group, the problem, your specific contribution and what happened. If you write that you led a project, show which decision you made or responsibility you carried. A title alone leaves the reader to guess. Finish by explaining how you would bring that practice into the Canfield community.

For example, a hypothetical club treasurer could explain how members disagreed about an event budget, how the treasurer made the tradeoffs visible and what the group chose. That gives the essay a job beyond repeating the résumé’s membership and dollar totals. The example is a writing exercise, not an admissions formula.

Use the expanded résumé for context that the short essay cannot carry: sustained responsibilities, work alongside school and the scale of a commitment. Choose an academic recommender who can describe your work with concrete examples. The published review is holistic; these pages do not turn a particular score or activity into a guaranteed offer.

Sophomore admission: requirements and the published rate

As checked October 26, the sophomore application reopens February 1, 2027. It requires 24 college semester hours across freshman fall and spring, specified economics, calculus and rhetoric coursework, a statement, résumé and eligible academic recommendation. Check the course-transfer restrictions before selecting business classes: some completed core courses make an applicant ineligible. Official sophomore requirements and statistics

For 2026 sophomore admission, Canfield reports 188 applications and 32 admits: 32 ÷ 188 is approximately 17.0%. Its admitted-student average GPA is 3.98. An average describes that cohort; it is neither a minimum nor an offer threshold.

Keep the denominator attached: 17.0% is a calculated sophomore rate. The freshman pages reviewed here do not supply counts for a freshman rate. Program enrollment and McCombs’ separate BBA rate cannot fill that gap.

Dates to track for the 2027 freshman cycle

UT currently lists December 1 as the regular freshman application deadline and December 10 for university supplemental materials. Honors decisions are listed for March 1. Early Action applicants receive a decision or deferral by January 15, 2027; regular and deferred applicants receive a university decision by February 15. Keep the honors checklist and its requirements alongside those university dates. Current UT freshman dates

Record three things for every required item: its deadline, where you submitted it and whether the receiving system marks it complete. If the two checklists disagree or a course threatens sophomore eligibility, resolve that exact question with the program before the deadline. An application plan is useful when it exposes an unresolved requirement early enough to fix it.

Then compare the academic program with McCombs’ program-specific rankings and your UT cost-of-attendance budget. Canfield can be a preferred outcome without making every other degree plan contingent on a later honors offer.
