Is your local contractor still locally owned? How to check
Follow the name on a quote through the legal entity, operating platform and investor, keeping each link attached to a dated source.

Find the legal name on the quote, then look for a dated chain from that entity to its operating platform and owner. The brand on the truck, the company that signs the contract and the investor above it can be three different names. A local address or a familiar founder does not settle who controls the business.
I would use ten minutes to build a first evidence trail, then stop at the first unsupported link. An incomplete chain is useful: it tells me what to ask before accepting a warranty or assuming that three quotations represent three independent owners.
Method & limits
Official Texas search and filing guidance checked October 21, 2026. This is a research method, not a fresh ownership or licensing determination for every business. The linked Austin census retains its July 26, 2026 cutoff; unresolved chains remain unresolved.
Start with the company that will owe you the work
Save the trading name, website, quoted legal entity and any license number. Use the spelling on the agreement. A service-area page can establish that a business markets in Austin; it does not establish its headquarters, controller or relationship to a similarly named company.
Ask who contracts for the job and which entity backs the warranty. Keep those answers separate from the salesperson’s description of the brand. A franchise also needs two records: the local franchisee and the franchisor. Membership in a national system does not by itself mean the franchisor owns the local operator.
Use Texas records to identify the entity
The Comptroller’s account-status search is an official starting point for a taxpayer or entity name. Match identifiers and addresses before joining it to a consumer brand. Treat tax status as tax status; it is not a certificate of ownership, service quality or licensing.
The Public Information Report guidance explains which managers, officers and qualifying parent/subsidiary interests are reported. Filing dates matter. A manager or registered agent is not automatically the ultimate economic owner, and a report is not a complete private cap table. Keep the exact reported role rather than translating every listed person into “owner.”
Follow transactions one link at a time
Search the company, platform and investor’s own acquisition announcements and portfolio pages. For every arrow, record both names, the stated relationship, source URL, announcement date and whether the source says the deal closed. An announcement of an agreement is different from evidence that ownership transferred.
The Austin census demonstrates the method: Radiant, Stan’s and Southern Home Services lead through different documented chains in the July 26, 2026 snapshot. That snapshot is a research lead for a new check. Its historical owner should not automatically become today’s answer.
Check the license separately
For HVAC work, use TDLR’s contractor guidance and license search. The agency describes contractor licensing and the licensed-contractor requirement for ACR companies. Compare the relevant contractor and business details with the quote. A failed name search needs investigation because trading names and licensed names can differ.
Ownership research and a license check answer different questions. Keep an unresolved license match separate from an adverse finding, and do not infer price, workmanship or safety from an investor classification.
Leave a small record you can update
A practical ownership note has six fields: consumer brand; contracting entity; platform or franchise relationship; controller supported by the available sources; effective date; and source for each link. Add “unresolved” wherever the public record stops.
When comparing bids, group documented common owners together, then compare the actual scope, exclusions, warranty and price. The dataset guide explains how to reuse the historical census without turning a brand count into market share.
