UT Austin parking: choose the right permit

A commuter permit, a residence-hall garage and an apartment parking addendum solve different trips.

Choose UT Austin parking by the trip you need to make: a daytime commute, overnight vehicle storage, residence-hall parking or a short visit. The current Class C page describes an off-campus commuter permit; Class R is for students with a University Housing and Dining residence-hall contract. Class C, Class R

An apartment in West Campus does not supply a university parking permit, and a university permit does not establish a parking space at the apartment. Check the campus rules and the housing addendum as two separate arrangements.

Method & limits

PTS permit information checked October 26, 2026. Current Parking and Transportation Services pages, posted signs and event notices govern access. No live permit inventory or fixed current price is asserted.

Choose the permit around residence and parking hours

Start with whether you have a university residence-hall contract, where the car must stay and when you will return. Then compare the permitted garage or lot with the building you actually need to reach.

PTS describes Class C parking as space-available and does not limit C permit sales. A purchased C permit therefore should not be read as an assigned stall near a particular classroom. Class R permits are sold in limited numbers and apply to the assigned garage.

A C permit is not overnight vehicle storage

The current C page says C and Longhorn Lots do not allow parking from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. It describes the permit as intended for people coming to and leaving campus each day. That restriction matters if an apartment has no parking and the plan is to leave the car on campus overnight. C hours and alternatives

PTS lists alternatives including an S permit with an overnight storage fee for non-dorm residents, an R permit for dorm residents, and hourly garage parking. It also describes other lots that open to any UT permit during specified hours. Read the exact location and time conditions before treating that as permission to stay.

For a multi-day absence, check the full period rather than only arrival time. A space available on Friday evening may have a different rule before Monday morning or during a campus event.

Garage access still has a location and an exception list

The R page says the permit is valid in the garage purchased and describes general 24/7 access with exceptions. It also notes upper-level parking restrictions during weekdays. “Garage permit” is not a universal right to every garage and every stall. R permit scope

C parking can be relocated for events, and PTS directs drivers to signs and email notices. Check those messages before leaving a vehicle through an event period. The permit’s ordinary weekday use is only part of the operating conditions.

Use the current PTS site and Parking Profile for the available product and its price. Keep the permit period, garage, storage option and any event conditions with the quote so the total can be compared with another commute plan.

Compare apartment parking with a complete commute

For a West Campus quote, ask whether parking is included or optional, whether the space is assigned, the access hours and the full contract cost. Check clearance, charging or other requirements if they affect your vehicle. Confirm which document controls a change or cancellation.

Then test the walk from that building to the classes you expect to attend. UT’s neighborhood guide describes West Campus broadly between Guadalupe and Lamar, from Martin Luther King Boulevard to 28th Street. That entire area is not one interchangeable walking distance. UT neighborhood guide

Use the maintained housing map to identify candidate buildings, then inspect the actual entrance and route. A map marker is a useful start, not a measured door-to-classroom travel time.

Compare the full period, including the option to leave the car

An academic-year permit, an apartment’s recurring parking charge and a visitor garage day rate have different units. Put each option on the period you need, then add only the charges that actually apply. Include the overnight requirement before declaring the cheaper option.

Compare a walking or transit plan as well, using the current service and operating hours that fit your schedule. The useful question is the cost and reliability of reaching class, not simply the lowest number next to the word parking.

The West Campus apartment comparison puts parking into a full lease calculation. The attendance-cost guide explains why a university transportation budget is different from your actual permit bill.
